이 내용은 내가 며칠 동안 실제로 겪은 사건을 바탕으로 쓴다. 워낙 호기심이 강하기 때문에 늘 새로운 것을 파헤쳐 보려는 성격 때문인지 이런 일이 나에게 닥치면 오히려 즐기는 편인지 모른다. 그리고 분명한 것은 뭔가를 잃을 수도 있지만 얻는 것 또한 있기 때문이다.
지난 22일 페이스북에 쪽지가 하나 와 있었다. 카스는 자주 하지만 페이스북은 카스와는 방식이 다른 것 같고 늦게 시작해서인지 익숙하지 못해 자주 하지 않게 된다.
얼굴 사진을 보니까 흑인 여성이었다. 한국말로 "안녕하세요"라고 인사말만 남기고는 다른 내용은 없었다. 수년간을 채팅 등 많은 메신저를 해 보았지만, 여자들이 먼저 말을 걸어 오는 경우는 흔한 일이 아니다. 혹시 영어 공부에 도움이 될까 싶어 누구냐고 답장을 보냈다. 그러자 얼마 후에 메일 주소를 알려 주면서 메일로 소통하잔다. 나도 영어 실력이 부족하니까 메일로 주고받으면 해석하는 것에 별 무리는 없겠다 싶어 메일을 보냈다. 무슨 일로 나에게 인사를 하고 메일을 하느냐고 물었다.
그녀는 짐바브웨라는 중앙아프리카 출신인데, 아버지가 무역업을 하면서 돈을 많이 모았다. 여기서 짐바브웨라는 나라에 대해서 잠시 살펴보면 인플레이션이 엄청나게 심한 나라라서 과일 하나를 살려면 자기 나랏돈으로 수백억을 지급해야 하는 나라다. 못사는 나라에서도 그중에 부자가 충분히 있을 수도 있는 법이다. 그런데 돈이 많다는 소문 때문인지 자기 가족과 아버지와 같이 사업을 하던 사람은 살해를 당했는데, 자기는 학교 기숙사에서 생활하는 바람에 화를 면하고 자기 나라에 더는 있지 못하고 세네갈 난민촌에서 생활하고 있다고 했다. 나이는 23살이라고 했는데, 세네갈에서 발급하는 신분증에는 1990년생으로 만 25세가 된 나이였다. 이런 점에서는 수학 선생들은 재빨리 나이부터 계산한다.
아버지가 영국 왕립 은행에 오백칠십만 달러를 입금했는데, 이 돈을 상속을 받아야 하는데, 자기는 지금 처지가 돈을 인수할 형편이 안되니까 내가 받고 20%는 나 보고 가지라는 것이었다. 충분히 가능성이 없지는 않지만 황당하기도 했다. 몇 번 메일을 주고받았는데, 난민촌에 있다 보니 메일도 목사님께 어렵게 부탁해서 하루 두세 번 정도 컴퓨터 사용을 허락받았다고 했다. 머릿속이 좀 복잡해지기 시작했다. 만약 오백칠십만 달러를 대신 상속을 받는다면 그 사람에게 돌려주지 않고 아무도 모르는 곳으로 잠적하면 어떠냐는 생각도 했다.
문제는 그 돈이 영국 왕립 은행에 저금이 되어 있느냐가 문제인데, 자기 돌아가신 아버지의 계좌번호와 은행의 전화번호 팩스 번호 담당자 이메일까지 그대로 알려 주었다.
혹시 전화하면 돈이 자동으로 빠지는 그런 것일지도 모른다는 생각에 엄두도 내지 못하고 아니면 공중전화 카드를 사서 한 번 확인해 볼까 싶었지만, 메일도 겨우 해석하는 영어 실력으로 무슨 통화가 될까 싶어 있었는데, 영국 왕립 은행에서 직접 내 아이디로 메일이 도착했다. 그 사람이 직접 은행에 메일을 보내도록 부탁해서 돈을 찾을 수 있는 절차를 설명하는 메일이었다.
그 전에 검사 출신의 고등학교 친구에게 몇 가지 문의했는데, 사기꾼일 가능성이 크다는 말을 들었기 때문에 조금은 장난기를 발동해서 장난이나 좀 쳐보겠다는 생각으로 마음을 정리하고 있었는데, 은행에서 직접 나에게 메일이 오니 마음이 흔들리기 시작했다.
대충 계산해도 오백칠만 달러에 20%이면 11억 이상은 먹을 수 있는 돈인데 싶은 생각에 침이 넘어가기 시작했다.
그녀는 열악한 난민촌 생활에서 벗어나고 싶다고 했고 나를 은행에 가서 은행 계정하라는 말을 했는데, 무슨 뜻인지는 잘 모르고 미적거리고 있었다. 은행에서 온 메일은 4단계를 그치며 돈을 나에게 지급한다는 내용이었는데, 그중에 변호사 선임이 있었다. 그것이 우리나라 변호사를 선임하는 것이 아니라 그쪽 변호사를 선임하라는 말인 것 같았다. 내가 그쪽에 아는 사람도 없는데, 어떻게 변호사를 선임하라는 말인가. 그래서 결론이 사기를 치는 것이구나 확실히 판단하고 메일을 보냈다. 은행에서 말하기를 당신들은 사기꾼들이다. 조금 있으면 반드시 변호사 선임 비용을 보내라고 할 것이고 내가 만약에 보내면 당신은 소식을 끊을 것이다. 그리고 은행이라고 메일이 온 곳에도 메일을 보냈다. 여기서는 당신들의 은행이 검색되지 않으니까. 홈페이지 주소를 알려 주기 바란다. 아직 두 곳 모두 답이 오지 않는다.
행여 사실일지도 모른다는 생각에 조금은 기대했던 한 주 정도의 부푼 꿈은 물거품이 되고 나는 또 다른 하나의 세상을 경험하게 되었다.
